This evening, President Donald Trump selected 10th Circuit judge Neil Gorsuch to be his nominee for the Supreme Court.
The pick was a crucial reason why so many voted for Trump and why he was elected. Many were hopeful that Trump would pick a solid conservative judge.
And it looks like he did!
Gorsuch was a late-comer to the race who was on Trump’s post-election list, but wasn’t considered a favorite until immediately after the election. Gorsuch is heavily educated and a “Beltway” favorite. His mother was President Reagan’s head of the EPA, and he clerked for Byron White and Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court. Gorsuch was confirmed for his Federal judgeship via voice vote. He is a strong supporter of religious freedom.
His quote on the proper role of a judge is telling. It confirms his standing as a strict-constructionist:
…to apply the law as it is, focusing backward, not forward, and looking to text, structure, and history to decide what a reasonable reader at the time of the events in question would have understood the law to be — not to decide cases based on their own moral convictions or the policy consequences they believe might serve society best.
He also has written a book arguing against laws that permit euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide. He articulated his belief against the practices as:
…all human beings are intrinsically valuable and the intentional taking of human life by private persons is always wrong
He is already receiving RAVE reviews. Even from LIBERALS!
