Melania Trump Responds to Emily Ratajkowski’s Anti-Slut-Shaming Tweets: “Applause to All Women Who Speak Up”

Emily Ratajkowski isn’t one to back down when it comes to voicing her opinions on gender injustice and body shaming, and she’s getting props from none other than Melania Trump for her latest crusade in defense of the First Lady.

The 25-year-old model and actress was at a New York Fashion Week show when she heard a New York Times reporter seated next to her make derogatory comments about Mrs. Trump. Ratajkowski took to Twitter to call out the journalist (whom she didn’t identify) and make clear that slut shaming is never acceptable, no matter who it’s directed toward.

“Sat next to a journalist from the NYT last night who told me ‘Melania is a hooker.’ Whatever your politics it’s crucial to call this out for what it is: slut shaming. I don’t care about her nudes or sexual history and no one should. Gender specific attacks are disgusting sexist bullshit,” Ratajkowski tweeted.

Hours later the First Lady took to Twitter via her newly minted @FLOTUS account to praise women who stand up for each other, and specifically tagged Ratajkowski in the tweet.

She wrote, “Applause to all women around the world who speak up, stand up and support other women! @emrata #PowerOfEveryWoman #PowerOfTheFirstLady”

It should be noted that a Times rep addressed the situation, and provided the following statement to Politico:

“At a party last night, a Times reporter who does not cover Washington or politics, referred to an unfounded rumor regarding Melania Trump …The comment was not intended to be public, but it was nonetheless completely inappropriate and should not have occurred. Editors have talked to the reporter in question about the lapse.”

This isn’t the first time Ratajkowski has taken a stand against slut shaming. In addition to posting her own tribute, she literally stood with Kim Kardashian against haters in a collaborative nude selfie, and about a year ago she opened up in an essay for Lenny Letter about the body shame she experienced as a young adult and her journey toward embracing her sexuality on her own terms.

A lesson to the haters: Don’t mess with Melania Trump—or Emily, for that matter.

  1. I’m sure she’s a bright capable person, but having blatantly lied about having a college degree and then trying to cover it up.. and plagiarizing a speech puts her integrity in question. And that is an important trait for anyone especially a First Lady.
